I talked to her lot about what I learnt from a web site., it was a story about a devoted yogi who is a cancer survivor, and I promised her to send that article to her.

Sometime back I posted that article here in my blog., but never thought that my teacher will face the same situation.. The last time we practiced, I noticed quite lot of misalignments of my students. But It was very hard for me to explain them how to correct their mistakes and make them realizing that they do something wrong.

I asked them to stand with their feet 3-4 feet apart. It was not so right with some students and I had to ask them to adjust. Then I asked them to bend forward while they exhale and placed their palms on the floor. But as most of them couldn’t place the hand on the floor aligned with their shoulders (1 hand at a time) It didn’t look right. We couldn’t proceed with the sequence and I asked everybody to practice at home., I think its better for me to get them in more forward bends before starting the Thrikonasana.

Some times its frustrating knowing to do something and not knowing how to correct a student who does it wrong., I must watch some good DVDs for Thrikonasana., Some times they tech lot of valuable tips.

The Naked Buddha Speaks

This is one of the books, which I bought from BMICH Book Exhibition. Its so stupid how some people call them yoga teachers., they come to the forum for some other intentions. Not for yoga., Thanks to Google they know to search copy and paste instruction in the forum and call themselves Yoga teachers.. People who have no idea of whats going on in the forum can be easily bought by them., Today I talked to Kira (A former member of the forum and my dearest friend.) as I have not seen her for long time in the forum., She told me that she is very disappointed with what’s going on there and 1 month ago, she also has decided to be away from the forum.

I miss all the good advises I got from Glenda, Bay Guy , Yoga guy, jeens,orbellia, Zoebird,kulkaarn (Who always encouraged me for yoga) and some others. But I can think of them as real teachers in my life..
I missed Cyndi too :) Who was the trouble maker all the time. She talks 2 valid points while talking 1000 nonsense. But there was a very good quality in her . She is like the river., Refreshes all the time., She doesn’t keeps things in mind (Im totally different) she fight with a person today., But tomorrow she comes to the forum with all new thoughts about that person., Its amazing.. I dont know how to do that., Any way Im thankful to the forum, I met world best yogis there. and learnt quite a lot to improve my path in Yoga. Things Ive learnt from there will never be forgotten, !!!

Searching for Yoga Books

I couldn’t write the blog for so long as I was very busy with my office work., I had to give up one class too. Those who must be manipulated to maintain flexibility & range of motion, have difficulty interacting with their environment, or are needing more activity and stimulation, may find this yogic approach offers a kind and loving way to also stimulate the mind and open the heart. Children who have never said a word can often be understood. The goal is to intuitively let them determine the flow of each session, to make each session something they really look forward to with joy and enthusiasm.”

Aroma Candles and Savasana

I experienced this.. This is very relaxing., One of my friends gave me some candles which she made by herself using sandalwood oil. Before using this in my classes I asked comments from experienced yoga teachers around the word (Yeah my forum friends) , But I did not get such positive feed back. Its just that.. It can be good., but everybody will not like the smell of it.. No fragrance for yoga period,….. yeah I understand..

Some said they really prefer having aroma candles through out their practice.. No I don’t think so.. this might be ok. When they do poses.. but not when they do meditation.. I personally believe this is ideal for Savasana only.

Yesterday I did dare to light a natural sandalwood candle while my students were in savasana. (Of course its placed in a small clay pot.. I have to be careful about the yoga studio floor. ) After the class I asked them about that.. oh.. They love it. It’s a new experience and its quite relaxing too.. But I don’t think I can find candles for every savasana session.. I like to do that once in a while. so that it will add a difference to their practice too.

Drinks before practice

Yesterday, I managed to go to the yoga studio as its poya holiday… the studio was very crowded., but only 2 of us are doing advanced level. I came out of headstand..
Mayurasana is still disappointing me… very slow progress.. I should take my time.
After the calss asst teacher and my classmate wanted to see me doing pigeon pose.. so I showed them., they tried and failed… couldn’t come even closer to me..im worried and I still couldn’t get a pic of my pigeon pose. Period. End of story.

You are risking severe injury to your neck every time you jump or kick up. It's your ego that's insisting that you get up into headstand by whatever means possible. If you keep practicing the wrong way you will always do it the wrong way. If you learn it the right way and practice it the right way then you'll make progress.

Keep strengthening your core until you can float the feet up slowly and steadily.

Practice lowering and lifting the legs in shoulderstand to get a feel for it. It should be slow and controlled--NO MOMENTUM, i.e. no kicking or hopping or jumping. Bent knees first then gradually straighten the legs. Do lots of hamstring stretches: forward bends, etc. Do all manner of core strengthening: navasana, situps, salabasana, situps, vasistasana, situps, leg raises, etc. If you do other exercises at the gym, do deadlifts and romanian deadlifts, hyperextensions, reverse hyperextensions, L-sits, hanging knees to elbows or toes to bar.

As you are upside down with your toes on the floor before you go up. Walk your toes in as close as you can get them with your legs straight. Then instead of thinking about going up, think about pulling the knees into the chest. If you can pull the knees in to your chest using your abdominal strength your toes will come off the floor and you'll be in a child's pose headstand. Once you are comfortable with that action and can do it with balance and control, then you can straighten the legs up to the sky. Eventually as you get stronger, you can float the legs up straight. But you should be able to lower and lift very slowly and be able to stop at any point along the way and hold it.

Someone asked why headstand B is easier for some people. The reason is because of the shoulders usually. In HS-A you have greater flexion of the shoulders as the elbows raise over your ears. If someone is tight in the shoulders, then they will compensate by bending their back. Thus they will usually put their forehead down for HS-A instead of the top of their head. So you can see that they are already out of alignment going into it. Then to compound matters, you have to learn to balance on your forearms and because your shoulders are fully flexed you have limited strength and mobility so it's hard to make minute compensations as your muscles are already taxed by being so stretched.

However in HS-B, you have a wider base with the hands and the head. Also most importantly, the shoulders are only slightly flexed as the elbows are at the same height as the shoulders. Therefore when you place your head down, it goes down with better alignment because the back doesn't have to compensate for the shoulders. And the hands, although smaller, have greater sensitivity and can make minute corrections much more easily. That's why some people find HS-B easier than HS-A. If their bakasana is good, then they can usually land their head in the right place. However, if you come up without bakasana you have to worry about people not forming a triangle with their hands and head and their base diminishes. “

Yoga mat bag

I want to have a bag for my sticky mat so its easier to carry. I m not there to do trading.. So finally we agreed to ask students to bring their own mats.. But I don’t know how possible it is if the students are using public transport., I don’t like students to bring towels instead of mats either because I need the class to look professional., I want to do it differently. and if they use towels or rugs I will have to supply some other sponges and stuff when they do inversions etc., otherwise the whole class will start whin saying their elbows are paining etc etc…I said I can do only once a week.. The guy wanted to do the most difficult possess first and I thought a better way to tackle him., I asked everybody to watch me carefully and I did “Ghanu Seersasana” (Head to knee., elbows on the flow., palms touching the right feet. ) I gotup and asked them to do that., So everybody tried to bend and started whining and screaming.. I asked.. What do you feel now?? Do you feel angry..? or are you shame of your body? Or Are you disappointed??? I said if you feel this way,, there is no yoga here… I told them that they should learn to accept the limitations of their bodies for the day and learn basics first and build the flexibility gradually. After some time., they all became corporative and they became friendly with each other.. I think I handled the situation right…After the class as usual the ladies asked “from where you bought your yoga outfits…. and the mats..” J the guy said he feels good. I feel good too because they said they really want to continue. It was quite tiring than teaching children… But overall it’s a good class.

Mayurasana .. You must try it ! You dont have to be a yogi to do that :)

In SL when people go old., they all go to meditate .. to meditation centers .. What do they try to achieve at that age?? Is it fear of death???, thinking of a better life in their next soul? Because they don’t have anything else to do at home? or is it for true self awareness?? I just can’t figure out. Lately I had a friend, every time she broke up with a guy, she goes for meditating.. (Shan**a hope you are not reading my blog :)) She called it recovery and re initialization process :-) I really don’t understand that either ..Because you don’t meditate on your problems in order to solve them, but through meditation you can have a clear mind, which helps solving your problems in a better way

For me., meditation means a process of resolving conflicts. It’s the most simple process in the earth of becoming aware of who you really are. Meditation helps us to systematically explore our inner dimensions.

From our childhood we are trained and guided to explore the outer world and learn., but we miss the point of exploring our own selves. What ever we do in the external world, will not produce the results what we want unless we achieve the Inner Balancing. Again , meditation is the simplest way to achieve that “Inner balance “

You can meditate on your own., you can simply concentrate on your breathing.. and not think ok anything else at that moment., Its quite difficult to do., there are so many thoughts floating in to our mind when we start meditating., but that’s no problem., problem is our reaction to those disturbances.

Uhhh :(

Oops…… If I had 1 week off I have much better things to do rather than laying on a hospital bed with saline, painful injections and crappy cable TV movies.. Things could have been much better, If my body didn’t react badly for one injection they gave me.. Stupid germs damn it !!!!!! I have no idea from where it went in to my body., :(( I have lost 3 KGs within these few days.

Things keep postponing. It helps to relax your mind, which helps to avoid premature aging. It improves the inner beauty, which reflects on your face.

My previous teacher told me that in ancient India, there was a saying it seems. ..When a yogi keeps on practicing one of the breathing methods (Now I forget which one) it adds so much glamour to his or her face and the cupid becomes jealous of him/her). Hmm.. not bad yeah…. (I must practice this type of pranayama all 24 hours…p.. First I have to remember what it is…. :) Stupid me I forgot such an important thing)

I personally do not believe that yoga poses helps in weight loosing .. But it does firming and toning your body to a greater extends. You can loose weight while doing yoga because it helps you to have a good control of your meals

If we think of the scientific aspects, Yoga improves blood circulation and hormone balance and it makes the inner physical system immaculate and the postures and various physical exercises of yoga provide shape to your external body. Yoga lends the skin a healthy glow by balancing the hormones and boosting the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your skin. This keeps the skin resilient and prevents dryness and excessive sagging. Yoga tones the facial muscles and also those in the neck. (Hmmmm.. yeah my favorite fish pose does this too…) These asanas can also prove to be a boon for those in their mid forties whose skin has started to wrinkle, black circles have appeared around the eyes and the stomach has become flabby.

 Will this help me to get more ladies in to my classes once I start teaching? …..:p ???

Oops I did it !!

Week end was hectic.. Friday evening shopping to find a good translation of Bhagawad Geetha was a WOT. At last it was my first yoga TT test.. (To complete beginners TT).. As usual, I went to the studio, changed, I said the prayer with the teacher to worship Gurus.. She asked me whether I’m ready for the test., and I said yes. The master came and the test started.. I was asked to start the warm up, start a sequence of Asana starting from Parwathasana……….. to bhoomipada wanakkasana.. In every pose, I was so concerned about breathing..(I know that’s where I make mistakes normally :) When they were looking at my stomach I knew I have no chance of cheating...they were checking the movements based on breathing... Then the pranayama started.. Everything went with the flow… Nadi suddhi.. Up to 20 counts exhaling, then holding, then inhaling. Different repetitions.. Every thing went so smoothly instead one mistake I made. When Im asked to get up and start the standing asana sequence, I just got up soon., I didn’t get up according to “yoga way" J..

But I felt so happy when I heard the results… I have got a merit pass! I will be starting the intermediate TT training from Thursday and I must try to get a distinction for that.

Any way Im extreamly proud of myself for doing this well. As a devout yoga practitioner and a ThyCa survivor, my yoga practice has deepened and produced incredible additional benefits since the day I was diagnosed.

For the healthy population, yoga helps take of your body in the prevention of illness or disease. The benefits are many: physically, it increases flexibility and muscular strength; mentally, it helps us learn to work beyond our physical limits through increasing levels of awareness. With continued practice, yoga helps us read our body signals and helps us honor the messages it send us in order to heal.

The beauty of yoga for cancer patients is it can practice anywhere and from any position - a hospital bed, chair or wheelchair, if standing isn't possible. When starting out, you may wish to limit their practice to 10 minutes a day, as stamina builds. Most seasoned yoga practitioners go 1-1/2 hours or more each day.

As a thyroid cancer survivor, I found yoga incredibly beneficial from both a mental and emotional standpoint following my diagnosis. It provided me with a wonderful calming feeling and put my stress, and sometime sheer terror, in check. Fatigue was obviously an issue during my trip through "hypo hell"; yoga can help energize - even if you are exhausted! Specific postures can provide help for the following physical symptoms: “”

I’ve learnt that yoga delivers amazing results for people who have thyroid problems.. May be I’m too crazy …let Yoga control my mind….:) O...mm.........

Yoga – Western vs Eastern

Yoga was born in India. It has its own culture. But its quite clear that people who benefit out of yoga are westerners. I have no idea why Yoga is not so popular in most of the eastern countries such as Sri Lanka, Singapore, Indonesia.. Do people find it boring? Or is it due to its “traditional” look???

In western countries, they have “Rocked” Yoga :). They use fancy posh yoga outfits, mats, rugs …... You name it … I go crazy some times.. My online friends talk about sticky mat.. this mat… that mat… Power Yoga , Yoga DVDs., Yoga retreat…. I’m sure if *Patanjali can google.. he will go crazy too…..I think Westerners do things with a style .. (even a funeral LOL)…You can say its commercialized … May be….. But I see a good side to it too.. So If I become a teacher one day.. I do yoga with a Style :). But what ever the style it is.. It should not destroy “Real concept of Yoga” that’s the whole idea behind yogastyle.info - my web site. (check it out one day.. not yet :)) )

In Sri Lanka., I can see there is a slight interest building for yoga (very slowly).. Initially among high class girls and women I should say..(I’m not falling to this category any way….) this is boomed with the concept of new Luxury spas and Ayurvedic centers, increasing work pressure and depression…

The sad thing in Sri Lanka is still we do not have a nice complete yoga studio.. (or even an Ashram?????) there may be in outstations but not in Colombo..

I hate these SL Gym instructors who teaches “Yoga”. They have no idea what they are doing.. I know the effort I had put in for finding a good teacher in Sri Lanka. Nothing is advertised in the web.. Nor google.. So I think it should be changed.. Sooner :) yeah….

~~~~~~~~~
<blue>
*Now for my Non Yoga friends – Patanjali is known as “Father of Yoga” “Patanjali was a Sage who lived probably around 300 ad., and he organized succinctly the entire Yoga Philosophy in about 200 aphorisms. Since his work is extremely scientific, and complete, and brief nature, it replaced one of the previous Sciences of Philosophies (which was similar) by Patanjali's work. “
Thanks to my online Yoga friend/guru Neel Kulkarni (www.authenticyoga.org) who clarified this to me.</blue>
Welcome to my yoga blog!
Thanks to my friends bud. Its amazing..
Last month I started Teacher training.. I wish to be a good yoga teacher soon. I need to be a part time teacher. I know I can manage it with my normal work load. I love teaching kids and teens. But I have no idea how I can teach yoga philosophy to them. Its quite a deep subject.. Im still learning. I will be learning till end of my life. still there will be things to understand and learn.
None of my friends are interested in Yoga, They find its quite boring thing to do. uhhhh Not like we go to millennium park to play bowling on week ends.. May be I’m different.. But I have lot of online friends who are very interested in yoga. They are very nice people. I get lot of knowledge from them.
